A Prize for the World

Ray F. Smith and Perry L. Adkisson are named co-recipients of the 1997 World Food Prize for their work on integrated pest management. The 1997 World Food Prize was jointly awarded to Ray F. Smith and Perry L. Adkisson, who developed and popularized the lower-pesticide farming approach of integrated pest management (IPM). The two scientists devoted three decades of their careers to the development and adoption of IPM, which uses biological, cultural, and crop management techniques as well as chemicals in small amounts to protect crops from insect damage. IPM is used worldwide and was credited by the Prize Committee with vastly reducing farmer reliance on synthetic pesticides.
