Microwave ovens have become so popular and so many food products have been formulated or reformulated for use in them that an expert panel in 1989 called the microwave oven one of the ten most significant innovations in food science and technology during the previous 50 years. Microwave ovens are used in more than 85% of United States households and about 65% of foodservice locations. They are also used in food processing, although to a lesser extent.
