On college campuses, students are gathering, talking, sharing pictures and making plans. And it's all being done on the Web through sites such as Facebook.com, an online social networking site that has more than 80 million active users and is the sixth most trafficked Web site, according to comScore, a market research company. College dining operators are taking notice and have begun using the site to reach out to students. At 47,000-student Texas A&M University in College Station, Dining Services created a Facebook page last April. Stacey Rugh, assistant director of marketing, says the page was created to fill a void in information. Rugh says students were visiting Dining Services' Web site to process transactions and not necessarily to gain information. The department also learned that mass e-mails sent through the uni-versity's system were not garnering much attention.
