The importance of science to the food industry

We have an impression in the United Kingdom (UK) that the debate surrounding the food chain is a British phenomenon. Venture abroad and you will find similar debates in Denmark and other European countries, in Australia and in the United States (US) where the much vaunted Food and Drug Administration is taking a hard look at its procedures at a time when the UK government is considering the introduction of a Food Standards Agency. Much of the discussion is linked to new science and technology which has helped to fashion the wide range of good quality food now readily available all the year round.
