Potentially fatal allergens have been found in food samples at businesses in County Durham, research has revealed. Durham County Council officials found 15 food samples out of 51 tested contained traces of allergenic substances that could prove harmful or even fatal to those suffering from food allergies, according to research by Unchecked.uk. Samples were taken from food premises including food businesses and in each case there was no indication of the allergen's presence in the food product. The information came from a Freedom of Information request that asked about samples taking by council officials between 2016 and 2018. Emma Rose, director of Unchecked.uk, said: "In the worst case scenario, unknowingly consuming an allergen can prove fatal - and that's why the law requires food businesses to tell people what allergens their food contains. "But regulation is only as good as the enforcement that underpins it and it's clear that in the case of UK food law, the enforcement gap is looming large.
