The National Consumer Council's recent report, "Farm Policies and our Food: the need for change", is one of the most devastating attacks on European food production techniques and on the Common Agricultural Policy generally to have emerged in recent years. Coming as it does from a Government-appointed body, it carries more weight than do the many often prejudiced and intemperate outpourings of self-appointed lobbyist groups claiming to represent consumers' interests. Weightily it is, physically as well as technologically, running to 124 pages and costing £14. But it is packed with information and is worth reading, even if you do not agree With all its recommendations.
