Robert Parkin has a dream. It is a road map for the future of food packaging machinery. And if he can sell his dream to the packaging industry, his road map promises to take food companies on a long journey at the end of which the way food is wrapped and put in boxes and packets will have changed forever. Parkin is professor of mechatronics at Loughborough University. Mechatronics brings together mechanics, electronics, controls, and IT to create intelligent machines. Parkin wants to use that science to develop a packaging machine that can be fed with the raw materials of packaging - plain card, film etc - to produce and print packs 'on the fly'. He wants to avoid stopping the machine to change the tooling each time the food coming down the line is changed.
