What do I need a computer in my office for, asks Boyd Tunnock. "I can tell you exactly what our production figures for last week were, if you want to know." He reaches into a drawer next to his desk and immediately pulls out the relevant sheet of paper. I've got handwritten diaries going back 35 years," he adds. "I can tell you how last week compared to the same week the previous year, or 10 years previously - whatever you want to know." Needless to say, the 72-year-old boss of one of Scotland's most successful family-owned businesses is equally suspicious of the value of that other trapping of 'modern' business -the management consultant. "We've never had a management consultant in our production area," he says proudly. If these people really knew how to run a multimillion pound business better than you, they would be doing it themselves instead of talking a good game, he points out, not unreasonably. Indeed, the 530m company has managed rather well without their assistance thus far, says Tunnock, who is still at his desk at 8.30 every morning.
