Are graduates value for money these days? No doubt, many of us with a degree would answer:'Yes!' But for many food and drink employers that is not the case. It seems quite a number have had less than positive experiences of recruiting young people with a BA or BSc after their name. At a recent skills summit organised by grocery think tank IGD, one subject under discussion was: Have we got the right balance between graduates and apprenticeships? From the comments made, the answer would appear to be: probably not! Numerous attendees referred to graduates'inflated expectations. They often came in believing they knew it all; wanted swift elevation to management positions; and frequently left within just a couple of years. There were grumblings about a lack of basic literacy and communication skills too.
