Lincolnshire-based vegetable grower and packer Peter Thorold has installed equipment to automate the weighing and grading of broccoli. It is using a Compact Grader from Marel to meet customers'grading specs and reduce labour costs. The grader has to handle the 400-450 acres of broccoli that the company produces throughout the season, from June to November. "Previously we had up to 15 workers weighing the broccoli manually on individual scales,"said operations manager Ben Thorold. "Now we only need two persons to look after the weighing process. "The Compact Grader weighs the broccoli very well - up to 60 heads per minute. It is easy to operate and calibrate and has had a great impact on our operation. Our efficiency has improved, and with fewer people to attend to the grading process, we've also reduced our labour costs."
