Report reveals healthy growth for plastic rigid food packaging market

The plastic rigid food packaging market in North America reached approximately 4.7 million tonnes (10.3 billion pounds) in 2003, and is expected to increase to over 6.2 million tonnes (13.6 billion pounds) by 2008 at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 5.8%, says US company Business Communications Co Inc (BCC). According to a study entitled 'Rigid Food Packaging', recently published by the company, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the dominant resin at 2.6 million tonnes (5.8 billion pounds) and its use is rising faster than the total market, at an AAGR of 6.4%. High-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene and polypropylene come next, with the latter rising at an AAGR of 7.3%.
