Packaging materials for medicinal products — new legislation

Packaging materials are essential for the storage and transportation of pharmaceutical products. Recently, new guidelines have been published by the European Medicines Agency (formerly the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products) on plastic primary packaging materials intended to be in direct contact with active substances or medicinal products. This brief feature provides an overview of the legislation and TNO's services dedicated to testing packaging materials. The materials to which the new guidelines relate are containers, closures, seals and other parts of the container closure system(s), which come into contact with the active substance or medicinal product.
