"You have to be able to build your own helicopter to paint one," said Mike Rondot at his home and studio deep in the gorgeous Norfolk countryside. This seemed like an odd statement to be coming from a former fast-jet pilot with 12 years on SEPECAT Jaguars, including action in the Gulf War of 1991. He was proudly showing his latest commission, Happy Days, which portrays 22 Squadron Westland Whirlwind HAR.10 XJ723 from Coltishall, flying over the North Norfolk coast. The helicopter is preserved today in Montrose, Scotland and was the inanimate hero of the Sea Gem oil rig disaster of 1965.
