By mid-1944 the Japanese threat to India had been stopped by the decisive battles at Imphal and Kohima. After this, Allied forces under the incomparable General W J Slim began their long advance to Rangoon. The RAF, too, was in the ascendant, with many fighter units flying the superb Supermarine Spitfire Ⅷ. One of them was 155 Squadron, which after a period of dull defensive duties near Calcutta in mid-August had moved to Palel, near Imphal. Among its eager pilots was Fg Off Albert 'Witt' Wittridge, who flew his first 'op' from Palel the next day - escorting Hawker Hurricane fighter-bombers into Burma. Though the fighters had occasional encounters, the Japanese Army Air Force in Burma was a mere shadow of its former self and air combats were a rarity.
