When the Royal Naval Air Service was amalgamated with the Royal Flying Corps to form the Royal Air Force on All Fools' Day, 1918, naval units were renumbered in the 200 series; 1 (Naval) Squadron becoming 201 Squadron RAF. A period ensued in which the control of aircraft embarked in HM ships was divided, with die Admiralty responsible for operational matters at sea and the Air Ministry for shore-based administration, training and procurement.
