In many ways, Republics P-47 Thunderbolt was to the USAAF what the Hawker Hurricane was to the RAF - a loyal workhorse, often overlooked in favour of its more glamourous hangar-mate. The British fighter was overshadowed by the Supermarine Spitfire, while the Thunderbolt is less widely appreciated than the North American P-51 Mustang. This is reflected in the numbers preserved - whilst there are fewer than 50 substantially complete P-47s worldwide, one recent US airshow managed to muster nearly double that amount of P-51 s for its flying programme!
