No.3 Squadron AFC's numeric pedigree

Two units were formed at Point Cook, Victoria, in September 1916 - 2 and 3 Squadrons, Australian Flying Corps (AFC). Personnel from 2 AFC travelled to the UK and established themselves at South Carlton, Lines, with a variety of types. On December 28,1916,2 AFC was renumbered as 69 Squadron Royal Flying Corps. In August 1917 the unit standardised on the RE.8 and on the 24th flew to Lympne, in readiness for deploying to the Western Front. The move to France came on September 9 to St Omer and the following day settled on Savy, moving again to Bailleul on November 9. On January 19, 1918 69 Squadron RFC disbanded and became, confusingly, 3 AFC.
