Konwn as 'Wen to all around him, Wendel John August Nelson was born on June 11, 1917 in Pine County, Minnesota. His family later moved to Fremont, Nebraska and the youngster grew up in that small, mid-Western community where his parents instilled in their handsome son a sense of patriotism and fair play.
