Lancaster G-for-George - now on display in Canberra - was mentioned in the March FlyPast. This set the memories rolling.rnI assisted in the bombing up of the Lancasters in the winter of 1944 at Binbrook and I shall never forget the determination shown by all under the leadership of Gp Capt 'Hughie' Edwards then the Station Commander - we were snowed in for one week, but Binbrookremained operational the whole of the time.rnThe spirit of the 460 Squadron was emphasised by an earlier occurrence on the evening of July 3,1943, when the unit had come off a 'stand-down' and had been bombed-up when due to an 'apparent' malfunction of the electrical gear on the Lancaster DV172 dropped its entire bomb load at its dispersal point. Within minutes the 'Cookie' and two 500-pounders exploded, obliterating DV172 and I believe R5745 caught fire and G-for-George W4783 was damaged, ED774 also being affected, fortunately nobody died.
