New Portuguese Air Force Museum opens

After years of planning and redevelopment work, the new Portuguese Air Force Museum opened near the UNESCO World Heritage city of Sintra on January 29. The Museu do Ar collection was previously based in Alverca, just north of Lisbon, for 40 years.rnThe new location is part of an active military base that dates back to 1920 and is deemed to be one of the most important aviation heritage sites in Portugal. Accordingly, it is a fitting home for the museum.rnThe move has more than doubled Museu do Ar's undercover display area, from 32,293ft~2 (3,000m~2) to 75,350ft~2. It has also absorbed two important civil collections. The first is dedicated to the nation's main airline, TAP, and the second to ANA - the Portuguese authority for airport infrastructures. Both groups hold unique pieces that illustrate local and international aviation history, as up until the 1950s Lisbon was a main gateway for travellers coming to Europe from America and Africa.
