Sgt Jack Ramshaw was a veteran of the disastrous 'armed reconnaissance' at Wilhelmshaven on December 18,1939. Half of the 24 Wellingtons were lost, including five of 37 Squadron and five of 9 Sguadron. This was the biggest air battle the world had ever seen up to that point. In the frenzy, the Luftwaffe declared 27 Wellingtons down while the RAF bombers claimed 12 fighters (actually two destroyed, three force-landed). With one crew member dead and second pilot wounded, Ramshaw flew his heavily damaged craft almost home, but had to ditch near Great Yarmouth. His heroic fitter/rigger seconded as air gunner, AC1 Charles Driver, was awarded the first OFM of the war.
