When volunteers decided to turn a derelict and overgrown segment of the fanned Lincolnshire airbase of Woodhall Spa into a heritage site, there must have been some debate as to what label to give it. Museum? Well, it's certainly that, there is a wealth of carefully presented material to ponder. Visitor Centre? That's what was settled on, and Thorpe Camp definitely provides plenty for its guests. Personally, I think it comes under a different classification. Volunteers, veterans and visitors combine seamlessly as they step back in time to wartime Lincolnshire in this unique aviation community. Formerly part of RAF Woodhall Spa's 1 Communal Site, the buildings that form Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre were built in 1940. At the end of the war, when the RAF vacated the area, it became a target for squatters. It was taken over by Horncastle Rural District Council and converted into temporary housing and used as such until the early 1960s.
