Nicky Barr was one of Australia's most successful fighter pilots, credited with destroying at least 12 enemy aircraft. He was shot down three times and was badly wounded on the third occasion when he was captured by the Italians. After two failed attempts to escape from captivity, he was successful at the third, and he remained behind enemy lines for over a year conducting clandestine operations with the partisans and special forces. Andrew William 'Nicky' Barr was born in December 1915 in New Zealand but he grew up in Australia and was educated in Victoria, excelling as a sportsman.
