Two thousand Vietcong troops had gathered to overwhelm a US special forces camp in the A Shau Valley. There would be USAF air support, but the enemy were ready for it. At this point in the war, their antiaircraft firepower was relatively sophisticated. It was March 10, 1966 and a flight of six heavily-loaded two-seat Douglas A-IE Skyraiders from the 1st Air Commando Squadron, call-sign Hobo Flight, departed Pleiku in support. On the first pass, Capt Hubert King's aircraft took a round in the canopy, shattering it.
