Yorkshire-based 51 Squadron, part of 4 Group, flew throughout the Battle of the Ruhr, suffering a steady stream of losses and many other of its HP Halifaxes coming home badly damaged. All were victims of the formidable German defences -night-fighters and flak. Enemy opposition was not the only hazard. As Claude Wilson lifted Halifax II DT580 'MH-Z' off from Snaith, mid-upper gunner Sgt Louis Wooldridge noticed white smoke coming from the engines.
