The Mohawks in Kenya were part of a batch of 72 delivered to the French Air Force and transferred to the RAF on the fall of France. Most were sent on to the SAAF to be used in the training role, although some operations were flown by 3 Squadron. Lt Aerey's machine is shown after it came to grief at Nakuru. Ho.4 Squadron was posted to Middle East Command on September 1, 1941, where it and Cpl Gerald Moloney, the author's father, saw action in all the major battles, up to and including El Alamein.
