Light bomber units in RAF Germany were re-equipped with the Vampire FB.5 in the early 1950s. This single-seat, single-engined jet enjoyed a greatly improved performance over the Mosquito it largely replaced. Its simple, rugged construction also made it a much more reliable machine, while its agility gave its pilots the ability to fly in both the day fighter and ground-attack roles. In the spring of 1951, No.14 Squadron's aircrew comprised just nine Vampire pilots, commanded by the wartime-experienced Sqn Ldr R A 'Max' Sutherland DFC & BAR.
