Repousse or repoussage is a nietalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped to create a design or model. The word is French, with Latin origins, and means 'to push up'. The distinctive, aviation-themed work of Paul Pennell is the creation of three-dimensional shapes -including representations of the Avro Vulcan and Supermarine Spitfire - out of a single piece of metal. To achieve the impressive results, Paul uses embossing techniques that have been developed in various forms over thousands of years. In times gone by, suits of armour were decorated and pictures were made in this way, and everything from jewellery to tableware was created. The practice, and the skills behind it, have almost died out.
