Manchester Spitfire on the move

Supermarine Spitfire FR.XIV MT847 left Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry on February 9 and will feature in a new exhibition at Hendon's RAF Museum (RAFM). Since 1995 the fighter, on loan from RAFM, had been prominently displayed in the Manchester attraction's Air and Space Hall. At Hendon it will feature in 'Britain From Above', a new reconnaissance and aerial photography-themed exhibition that opens this month. The former 613 Squadron aircraft was used for photographic reconnaissance from 1946 to 1948, based at RAF Ringway (now Manchester Airport). Alice Cliff, curator of Science and Technology at the Museum of Science and Industry, said: "We are delighted this iconic aeroplane is going to be part of a new exhibition. We know it has been revered and loved by the many thousands of people who have visited the Air and Space Hall over the years, and we are thrilled that many more will get the chance to see it when it reappears in London." 'Britain From Above' is open until March 31,2015.
