Six in a day

In the bitter air fighting of the spring of 1918 it was common for pilots to make multiple claims. On March 24, 20-year-old Camel pilot Captain John Trollope of 43 Squadron claimed six victories in a day! Sadly, shortly afterwards he was shot down and became a prisoner. The national press enthusiastically reported his actions: "Trollope... saw four German fighting aeroplanes trying to interfere with some of our observing machines. Trollope attacked one and fired into it from close range, when the German aeroplane fell all to bits in the air... "[He] soon espied two more enemy two-seaters below him, close to the ground. He dived at them and engaged them one after another... both went down and crashed..." Out of ammunition, he landed, replenished and re-joined the fray. "Then he turned and attacked another of the enemy [and] fired into him at point-blank range, and the enemy went down spinning and then broke into pieces.
