A break from operations was on the cards for the personnel of 31 Squadron, the South African Air Force's first heavy bomber unit. But such hopes were dashed shortly before midday on Sunday August 13, 1944 when the aircrews were called to the 'Ops' tent. Ten aircraft were to leave immediately for Brindisi, in the 'heel' of Italy on the Adriatic coast, where they would receive further instructions.
