I enjoyed Peter London's article on the actions and ultimate destruction of 263 Squadron in Norway during 1940 (September issue). One of the pilots mentioned as lost from HMS Glorious was Plt Off H F Grant Ede, and his loss was particularly poignant. Christened Herman Francis Grant, he was born and brought up in Weber in the Pembroke area of the colony of Bermuda and was the only child of Ernest and Winifred Ede. His father was killed in action during World War One and never saw his son enter RAF College Cranwell as a flight cadet. Young Grant had joined the RAF rather than the Royal Navy at the behest of his mother who did not wish her son to follow her late husband to sea. In his two years at Cranwell, Ede undertook his officer and flying training and became a member of the college swimming team.
