Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, the backbone of the Brazilian Air Force (Forca Aerea Brasileira / FAB) was Curtiss' P-40 Warhawk and Republic's mighty P-47D Thunderbolt. While the latter had been used effectively by 1° Grupo de Aviacao de Caca (1° GVCA/ 1st Fighter Group) in the European Theatre between 1944-45, both types were long since usurped by a new type of machine, the jet.
