From Architect to Aviator

In recent years, the role of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) has been properly recognised, with the 'Spitfire Women' - including Joan Hughes, Freydis Sharland, Maureen Dunlop, Margaret Frost and Lettice Curtis - capturing later generations' attention. In 2018, the obituaries for pilot Mary Ellis described her as the 'last of the ATA women', but this was not correct, as I was to discover at an event meeting in Suffolk. The event committee knew of my experiences flying historic aircraft and mentioned that "a lady who used to fly Spitfires lives near you." Which was how I met the venerable Eleanor Wadsworth.
