It would be easy to say that the weather at the Imperial War Museum's Battle of Britain airshow, held over the weekend of September 21-22, was at both ends of the spectrum. While the Saturday was blessed with bright blue skies and temperatures in the 20s, Sunday was marred by rain and low, dark cloud. By far the best flying display at the Cambridgeshire airfield this year, an astounding line-up of more than 45 aircraft were planned to take to the air. Major highlights included a tail chase comprising four Hispano Buchons, three Spitfire Mk.Is and four Hurricanes accompanied by pyrotechnics, the latter saluting the 50th anniversary of the filming of Battie of Britain. B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B flew to George Fenton's Final Mission instrumental from the film Memphis Belle; plus the Bremont Great War Display Team and Guy Black's unique DH.9 performed. Duxford regulars included P-47 Nellie B, Catalina Miss Pick Up, and the Corsair and Wildcat. Other showpieces included a Hawker Fury/Sea Fury trio, and a quartet of P-51Ds, neither of which have been seen at a UK airshow in several years.
