Rolls-Royce Launches Turboprop for Small Airplanes

At AirVenture Rolls-Royce launched a new small turboprop engine, the RR500, intended to provide affordable turboprop power for small airplanes, most likely in the four-to six-seat category. The engine, a turboprop version of the turboshaft model planned for use by Robinson Helicopters in its developing R66 model, weighs in at around 250 pounds with accessories, prop not included. Rated at up to 400 shp for takeoff, the engine will produce 380 shp continuously and 320 shp at normal cruise, making it competitive power-wise with normally aspirated engines from Continental and Lycoming, albeit while using more and heavier fuel in the process.
