Beginning with virtually nothing but hard-earned seat-of-the-pants experience, rod lewis built one of south texas' most successful natural gas companies. A hands-on kind of guy, lewis personally tended his rapidly expanding operation, driving his pickup from well to well. Much as he loves his home country, when the odometer started racking up 300 and more miles a day, lewis sought another solution. As the son of an air force pilot, the answer came naturally - he bought an aircraft. His first was a hand-cranked aeronca chief. "i hardly drive at all." when the day's business is done, lewis turns to another consuming passion: world war ii warbirds. His collection of pristinely rebuilt and maintained vintage aircraft includes two of the world's most famous: rare bear and glacier girl. Rare bear, a modified grumman f8f bearcat, has set records as the world's fastest piston-driven plane, hitting 528 mph.
