The B-1Bs were previously Air Combat Command assets but now fall under the Global Strike Command (GSC) umbrella. Prior to the realignment, the nuclear-capable bombers were already GSC assets. It was deemed to be more efficient to have all bombers (long-range strike aircraft) report and be aligned to a single, centrally managed parent organization, regardless of whether the aircraft have a nuclear capability or not. The B-1, B-2, and B-52 all have functional strengths and weaknesses, so employment can be custom-tailored to fit the mission at hand.The 1980's-vintage B-1Bs remain a viable and lethal asset in today's sophisticated warfighting arena. While the Bone no longer has a nuclear role (a result of a treaty with Russia), the aircraft have a low-level capability superior to other aircraft. They can also deliver the goods from high altitude and from far standoff distances. To achieve the ultimate weapon delivery goal per mission requirements, the B-1B can be configured with a mix of specialty weapons designed for various niches and roles. The list of weapons that can be carried is quite extensive.The crew consists of four: a pilot, co-pilot, and two Weapon Systems Officers (WSOs) situated aft of the pilots. The Defensive Systems Officer resides on the left side, while the Offensive Systems Officer crews the right.
