To those of us who came of age during the Cold War, the concept of frenzied technological progress and drawing boards that were always filled with exciting new ideas was a given because we knew exactly who our enemy was and what he was doing. The match was between two 800-pound gorillas, and logic dictated that we should be as strong and as lethal as possible at all times because that was his goal as well. It never occurred to us that one day, right in the middle of the match, the other gorilla would heave a sigh of resignation and sit down in his corner of the ring.
