The handover of the Boeing 747-8 Freighter on 19 September to launch customer Cargolux marks both a beginning and an end for the Seattle airframer. As a new beginning, it marks the restart of 747 deliveries after a two-year hiatus, the first gap since handovers of the aircraft began in 1969. Delivery of the first (LX-VCB) and second (LX-VCD) 747-8F to the European cargo carrier will be only days apart, beginning the first of 25 to 30 747 and 787 deliveries Boeing is anticipating in 2011. With 13 of the type on order, Cargolux will nearly double its current fleet of 14 747s.
