Nigerian investigators have disclosed that the pilots of a Dana Air Boeing MD-83 that overran at Port Harcourt should not have been paired together as the first officer's training was not complete. The first officer had logged less than 89h on the type, out of 358h total time. While he was qualified to occupy the right-hand seat of the MD-83, he had not been released to fly unsupervised. Nigeria's Accident Investigation Bureau says the captain of the jet was not qualified as a type-rating examiner or instructor, nor was he a line-training captain. "The crew complement was not appropriate," the inquiry into the 20 February 2018 accident states. Investigators believe the first officer's lack of experience in- creased the captain's workload as the aircraft descended towards Port Harcourt in testing weather conditions. "During this very busy phase of approach, it was established that the captain was the only one who was actively alert in the cockpit, including runway look-out when he was supposed to focus on the instruments and calculations for appropriate decision-making," says the inquiry.
