Germanwings disaster adds to crash confusion

Airline safety in the first six months of 2015 has continued to be excellent, according to traditional markers, but the crash in the French Alps of the Germanwings Airbus A320 - believed to have been deliberately caused by the aircraft's co-pilot -has added to the confusion caused by two anomalous losses last year. The Germanwings event in March this year, combined with disappearance of one Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 last year followed by the shoot-down of another over eastern Ukraine, have challenged traditional assumptions about the definitions of airline safety.
