Firefighter Deaths Increasing Says Union

The past five years have seen the worst figures for 20 years for all operational deaths among firefighters, Fire Brigades Union General Secretary Matt Wrack has said.rnSpeaking at a Parliamentary lobby on firefighter safety, Mr Wrack said there has been a sharp increase in firefighter deaths in recent years.Union research shows that eight firefighters died on duty in 2007 alone, the worst years since 1985.Since 2003, 22 firefighters have died whilst on duty, which is a significant increase on the previous five years.From February 1996 until October 2002 there were no recorded fire deaths in the UK.However in the last five years at least 13 firefighters have been killed at fires.
