The horrific scenes that accompanied the killing spree carried out by Derek Bird in March 2011 reminded many of the similar carnage at Hungerford in 1987 and Dunblane nearly 11 years later. The tragedy at Dunblane unfolded over a matter of minutes, with the gunman Thomas Hamilton taking his own life. At Hungerford it lasted several hours before Michael Ryan took his life. In 1989, in an event that does not chill the memory quite so far, a lone gunman Robert Sartin embarked upon a similar killing spree that saw one man dead and 14 injured in a 20-minute period of intense and indiscriminate violence in Monkseaton in North Tyneside.
