The years since 2010 have been some of the most challenging in the recent history of the public sector. With budgets reducing year-on-year, services have become increasingly complicated to operate, following an often drastic reduction in the level of resources funded to provide them. On the one hand it could be argued that this 'austerity' has in a way been beneficial, due to the level of innovation that has subsequently been developed to cope with the ongoing cuts. Indeed, this is something that may well serve publicly-funded organisations going forward, particularly if they do succeed in reducing wastage, better-skilling the workforce and so on.
