CREATIVE CRIBBING

This topic stirs up a host of issues that we as rescuers discuss. Most of it revolves around technology concerns and today even the "basics" of extrication need a revisit. While we may at times pay mere lip service to stabilisation, proper stabilisation builds the platform on which we work. Proper stabilisation removes unwanted vehicle movement, secures the vehicle so we can displace vehicle components, and creates a pathway to disentangle the patient whilst facilitating access for EMS providers. Before we discuss the most common vehicle orientations let's talk about "creative cribbing" and basic stabilisation principles. First off, we want to maximise ground contact with the vehicle and remove unwanted vehicle movement. To do this we are going use one (or more) of three basic geometric shapes - hence the term "creative cribbing". Those three basic geometric shapes are a square, a right triangle and an isosceles triangle.
