Train crash kills 10

Ten people died and 70 were injured when a GNER intercity train hit a car on the east coast main line and then crashed into a freight train at Great Heck, North Yorkshire, on 28 February at 6.20am. Local police and British Transport Police were the first of the emergency services to arrive at the scene, closely followed by the fire and ambulance services. Fifteen fire appliances and 100 firefighters attended from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, while Humberside Fire Brigade provided additional support and West Yorkshire Fire Service attended with hydraulic rescue equipment to release passengers trapped in the carriages.
