Researchinto fire safety in high-rise buildings in Sao Paulo, one of South America's biggest 'megacities', has revealed serious shortcomings with fire safety in these types of buildings. The research, which consisted of an analysis of the Sao Paulo State Fire Department's database of fire incidents and a survey of high-rise office buildings, examined the level of fire protection and occupants' awareness of fire safety matters. It found that people who live or work in the city's numerous high-rises lacked awareness of fire risks and fire protection measures, while an alarmingly high number of building management personnel lacked the necessary fire safety qualifications and competence.
