Covered mall buildings have been around in the United States for nearly 50 years. Building code provisions specific to this type of building were developed in the 1970s. These define a covered mall building as a single building encompassing a number of tenants and occupancies, usually retail stores, where tenants have a main entrance into the mall. The mall is defined as a roofed pedestrian area within the covered mall building that serves as access for the tenants. Covered mall buildings are usually connected to surrounding department stores that complement the smaller retail spaces found within the covered mall building itself.
