The colvin Fire Prevention Trust has launched a fire safety initiative to educate owners, managers and trustees of country homes and estates on the importance of fire prevention. The first seminar was held in London on 13 November 2003 at Spencer House, an 18th century house which was originally built as a private palace and now holds many historic works of art. The first speaker was Jamie Cayzer-Colvin who, together with Peter Johnson, founded the Trust in April 2001. Mr Cayzer-Colvin established the Trust following the death of his parents in a fire at their country home in Tangley, Hampshire in February 2000. While playing the fire brigade video of the incident at Tangley, Mr Cayzer-Colvin described the experience of seeing his family home on fire as 'one of the most horrific experiences one could have'. He was not in the building at the time of the fire and arrived at the scene as soon as he heard of the blaze. Both of his parents had been asleep in bed. The ferocity of the fire meant that the only surviving remains of his parents were his mother's rings and his father's titanium replacement hip.
